Isabgol Production Declines – Demand Continues Strong!

The Psyllium Husk or Isabgol is a very popular product across the globe today. Considering the health benefits the product offers it has varied uses in the Pharmaceutical industry, Food industry, Animal feed industry as well the health industry. The versatility of this crop has made Psyllium husk a product with high demand today. According to DGFT data, India exported 29,343 tonnes of isabgol in 2011-12; 32,465 tonnes in 2013-14; and 32,325 tonnes in 2014-15. 2013-14 marked the highest export of Isabgol from India, when the production area was around 10,000 hectares. However, after this year the main Isabgol producing states in India have reported a decline in the production area.

Psyllium is produced in India in the dry drought-prone states of Gujarat & Rajasthan. The Isabgol production completely depends on the water availability & requires 3 -4 cycles of water to grow. Psyllium being a Rabi crop (winter crop), there is a climatic risk due to mid-season rains which can also damage the crop. Today 80% psyllium exports are made out of India to the world market which is an industry of 25 million annually. In India, the state of Gujarat contributes to almost 35% of the Psyllium production, along with Rajasthan contributing the similar production in the recent years. 90% of the Psyllium Husk is exported out of India all over the globe. The Government of India has implemented the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) in the year 2001. The national programme involves the accreditation programme for certification agencies, norms for organic production, promotion of organic farming etc. States like; Uttaranchal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim have been promoting organic farming. Organic produces are increasingly preferred by developed countries and major urban centers in India. Huge demand for Indian organic products especially Herbs, Oilseeds, Spices, Tea, coffee etc. in the international market. A special class of consumers is also emerging in the domestic market who requires quality food.

According to WHO, the total global organic food market presently is around $37 billion.  Of this $14 billion market is for herbal plants and medicines, which is expected to reach $5 trillion by the year 2050. According to the International Fund for Agriculture and Development (IFAD), India has more than 15,000 certified organic farms. Organic farms are generally more profitable and environmentally friendly, as it uses fewer chemicals and the residue is comparatively less chemical-intensive. As per several studies report it shows that practicing organic systems over a long period of time can outdo the conventional methods. By 2030, Meghalaya, another northeast state of India also eyes to convert 200,000 hectares of land into organic cultivation. At the consumer level, there is confusion between natural and organic products and a limited understanding of the health benefits of organic food products. In addition, consumers are faced with a plethora of decisions around brands — imported or domestic, product quality, the authenticity of claims and certifications. It is critical for companies involved in the organic food business to increase awareness of the benefits of organic food among consumers in non-metro cities. Progressively, people across all income groups should have access to organic food. This can be facilitated by different means such as establishing community-supported agricultural farms or with “grow your own food” programmes. Where penetration is low, smaller sized packs can help encourage trials.


Mustard Seeds – Market Trends & Global Demand

Mustard plant is vernacular to Asia and its one of the highly cultivated crop across the globe. It has a variety of uses and is rich in phytonutrients, minerals, vitamins, and anti-oxidants. Market Trends:

Consumption of mustard has been steady, and any growth in the market for mustard has a direct relationship to population growth. Japan was the primary export market, followed by Canada and Thailand. All three countries experienced a double-digit decline in mustard purchases.

On the other hand, imports have been increasing steadily. Canada was the main supplier, followed by India.

The major market for yellow mustard is the North American industry which uses the product as a condiment, sauces & pastes. Europe is the major market for brown mustard & they use it as a condiment, often in the form of specialty mustards such as Dijon. Asia is the major market for mustard seeds for use as spicy cooking oil and condiments in almost every recipe.

As per the IOPEPC market report, we had a 4% decline in the production of Indian Mustard Seeds for the year 2017-18. This was however also followed with the decline in the demand for the product across the globe. The Indian mustard production, however, is huge & sufficient to cater to the need of the Asian market. The estimated produce of Mustard crop for the year 2018-19 is expected to be 25,000 MT of which 90% crop is utilized in the country itself for oil making purpose. The rest 10% crop will be available for export across all continents.

The major importing countries for the Indian Mustard seeds are the Asian countries followed by Europe. The Indian Mustard is mainly used for oil extraction. It is not used to make sauce or mustard pastes owing to its slightly bitter taste. Considering this trend we expect the Indian crop will be able to fulfill the global demands. The Indian government lately has analyzed the global mustard demand & accordingly is taking measures to improve the quality of seeds so that they are compatible to the taste as required in different cuisines.
