Amaranth is the common name for more than 60 different species of amaranthus crop, which are usually very tall plants with broad green leaves and impressively bright purple, red, or gold flowers. Amongst these there are three species that are commonly grown for consumption -- Amaranthus cruenus, Amaranthus hypochondriacus, and Amaranthus caudatus.

Amaranth backs its origin to the natives of Central & South America. This 4000-5000BC old crop was famous amongst the royals & was a common feature of religious practices. Definitely, looking at its popularity then we can understand the strength that this crop can be associated with, gaining its importance in an era of extreme physical activities as the main source of living like farming & hunting.

It is believed that Amaranth dated its history back in India some 500 years ago through the route of trade from Africa. Since then this crop became the very source of energy for many Indians & is regarded as a Satvik food source according to Ayurveda. Satvik as the word suggest means pure & healthy.

Today, this beautiful golden & bountiful seed grown throughout India from the high slopes of the Himalayas to the many other regions of the country. Several Amaranth varieties are also grown throughout the country, however, the Himalayan region is mainly known as the Amaranth ‘centre for diversity’ for the number of varieties that are been cultivated. This crop is also a native species to the Andean region of South America; including Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. Amaranth is a crop valued for its medicinal, healing properties and as a gluten-free product. This high in fibre crop can be used in combination with wheat, corn or brown rice to get the goodness of a complete meal full of proteins fibres, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium & vitamin C. It has protein levels as high as found in fish, red meat or poultry & has more than three times the amount of Calcium. It’s an easy grain to digest & considered as prime source of energy during fasts. In India, Amaranth is mostly consumed during fasts as it can provide the much needed strength to the body & keep us fresh & energetic. Amaranth is consumed as both vegetable & a grain. Amaranth leaves are also considered to have healing properties & are used mostly by the Africans & Chinese in their cooking. It is also believed to help improve the eye-sight. This crop indeed yields gold & its golden benefits today are widely accepted all over the world!

United States of America ranks as the major consumer of Amaranth Seeds, followed by Canada & Netherlands. Incidentally, USA is also the largest producer of Amaranth crop as well as the largest importer.  At present, India is the largest exported of Amaranth seeds. India has the most conducive climate for the growth of Amaranth as the crop responds well to high sunlight & warm temperatures. This year 2015-16 India exported Amaranth Seeds worth USD 1,138,974.  At Organic Products India, every year as per available data, on around 10,000 Hectare of field amaranth crops are been cultivated and the yield is near to 2.5 MT / Hectare.
